A revised Endnote Style for Angewandte Chemie, and how to revise it

Many people use Endnote to manage citations and references in their manuscripts, and we rely on the Style files in order to generate them. Angewandte Chemie and associated journals from Wiley share an Endnote Style according to the Author Guidelines, which is linked to the download site at Endnote. This file has also been included in your Endnote copy released later than Dec 2009. However, this file seems to have an error on reference style.

Angewandte Chemie uses grouped reference, in other words the literatures cited at a single place will be presented as one grouped reference item in the reference list. According to the template provided by Wiley (available at Author Guidelines), it should be something like

[1] a) A. Author, B. Coauthor, ChemSusChem 2008 , 1, 1-10; b) A. Author, B. Coauthor, Angew. Chem. 2006 , 118, 1-5; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2006 , 45, 1-5.

Note that different literatures are leaded by a), b) and the like. However, the official release of the Endnote Style produces something like

[1] aA. Author, B. Coauthor, ChemSusChem 2008 , 1, 1-10; bA. Author, B. Coauthor, Angew. Chem. 2006 , 118, 1-5; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2006 , 45, 1-5.

See the difference? A right bracket and a space are missing. So how to correct it?

1. Open the official release of the Style
   Find this file at somewhere like C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X7\Styles. This address may vary according to your system and installation destination. Double-click the file Angewandte Chemie.ens to open it in Endnote.
2. In the left panel, find and click on Citations - Numbering. Now you can see content like Figure 1.

Figure 1. Editing the Style file. In the Bibliography group box, enter ) and a space in the “Followed by” textbox. This means to add the missing “) “ behind the sequence marks a, b, c, etc. If you don’t want Endnote show your references in a grouped manner, simply cancel the item “Use one number for references cited together”.

1. Click on File -> Save As..., then enter your desired name for this revised file. Endnote will save this file into C:\Users\YourName\Documents\EndNote\Styles.
2. Note that Endnote will search for style files (.ens) in either C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X7\Styles or C:\Users\YourName\Documents\EndNote\Styles. So putting your new style file in either folder is okay.
